The EF81 type appeared in 1968 as an electric locomotive compatible with DC and AC 50/60Hz, and is currently used as the standard AC/DC locomotive.

Four of the 300 series locomotives were introduced with stainless steel bodies for the Kanmon Tunnel, and currently the 303 locomotive is in use within Kyushu with its unpainted stainless steel body.
