The Fieseler Fi-156 Storch was developed following 1936 RLM specifications for a liaison and artillery spotting aircraft capable of Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) performance. Small-scale production began in 1937. The aircraft's distinctive appearance—with extended landing gear and large wings—earned it the nickname Storch (Crane). The Fi-156 served the Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe in multiple roles including executive transport, reconnaissance, and medical evacuation. Several variants were produced (A, C, and D series), and the design was exported to German-aligned nations including Croatia, Finland, Sweden, Bulgaria, Slovakia, Romania, and Italy. Post-war service extended across multiple countries.
